The event was held on 7th June 2014 at 8am to 1pm. Our target was to raise S$15,000 with the aim of benefiting underprivileged residents in the Moulmein-Kallang GRC and selected homes and social welfare organisations.
Beneciaries such as Willing Hearts, Kwong Wai Shiu Hospital, Bright Hill Evergreen Home, Singapore Christian Home and St Theresa's Home has recieved Rice donations. Also, part of the donations went into the welfare package that was distributed to the underprivileged residents in the Moulmein-Kallang GRC. The welfare package included items such as beehoon, biscuits and other homehold neccessities. Thank you once again to everyone who made this Event possible, no matter how small or large of a part you have played. Without you, the event would not have been that successful and allowed us to fulfil our aims and target! I have been living in a place where i had food to eat, clothes to wear. I had a sort of comfortable life. I was oblivious to what life was for the less unfortunate. However after this VIA, my eyes were open to my surroundings and i realised that the older people had many health problems, thus unable to work to sustain themselves. Not only that, large families had many expenses and they had to scrimp and save just to eat one meal. Some didn't even have phones! I was filled with mixed emotions. This VIA project really made me realise how fortunate i was and i have to treasure everything i have now. Giving out the welfare bags and looking at the recipient's happy faces, i felt a sense of satisfaction and i felt happy that my small little contribution lit up someone's day. I hope that i would be able to help people in future in my own little way!:) This experience was very meaningful. It showed me how privileged we were to be living in nice environments and also how life was like in a 1 room flat. It was an eye opener as despite the fact that the living conditions were not exactly the best, the closeness and bonds between each neighbor was almost as close as one of family. To be able to be a blessing to them by giving them the welfare packs was a great sensation. This was especially so when I could really sense and see the gratitude in their expressions and voices. In one of the houses we delivered the packs to, there was a dumb man. Despite the hindered ability to communicate, there was something about his expressions and eyes that showed that he was truly grateful and touched even though we couldn't understand what he was saying. To work with someone I wasn't very familiar with was also very interesting as we got to know each other better and became closer through this. This experience has taught me not only how to work with someone I was not familiar with but also that to be happy and grateful, you really don't have to have the best but rather it has to do with perception and yourself. Eden Tay (Senior High 1) It's been a rather new experience visiting such 1-room HDB flats, looking a little into the living environment of the residents there. It's my first time seeing such 1-room flats in real life and I'm sure that I wouldn't do so if I didn't go for the via. Some of residents were really eager to receive the welfare packages from us, as well as eager to talk to us. Sometimes other than just giving them some financial support, it would be nice for us to listen to them, even though I admit that it was a little awkward finding a suitable conversation with strangers. And for those flats with only few selected households, it reminds me that even in a more well-off residential area, there are always people in need, and they may be even more easily neglected. Kalena Lim (Senior High 2) This VIA was definitely a meaningful one. The most memorable moment had to be the interaction with the elderly during the distribution of welfare packages. At first I thought it would be very difficult to communicate with them due to the age gap, however, they were really happy and were welcoming us. Though the welfare packages were really heavy, I still enjoyed it because the people who received were already waiting for us and thanks us. I found it very touching as they were living in such poor condition but still smiling to me. So this made me think this distribution was worth doing it because my small action might make them happy. This was my first time seeing one room flat and such old HDB. I never thought there were people living in so poor condition in Singapore before. Like what Minister said, we cannot learn all this from textbooks. Only when we experience ourselves, we learn and know what is happening in the society. So after this VIA, I knew that I did not really aware of the current society. I would definitely wanted to participate in more VIA events like this. Furthermore, I felt that encouragements and help from friends and schoolmates were really important. I learnt to care about people around me as they helped me when I needed help. Communication was important too. Talking with my partners and the elderly made me less tired and made my day more fun. Coco Chiang (Senior High 1) Prior to this VIA, because I have very little opportunities to interact with elderly folk as my own grandparents are either no longer around or living overseas, I usually would not be able to relate to the elderly at all when I meet them in other VIA visits to welfare homes or simply when I happen to interact with them in public. To me, every elderly person I saw on buses or trains was just an "old man" or "old lady" and I never thought much about them. However, after today's experience, visiting so many blocks of one-room flats, I look at the elderly in a different light. Now, when I see an elderly man on a bus, I think "who knows, he may be an elderly man living alone in a one-room flat with nobody to look after him" instead of just labelling him an "old man" and assuming that he's well fed and well taken care of by his family. I have learnt to go the extra mile to bring a smile to these elderly's faces because those smiles of gratitude are worth working hard for, knowing that what little I am able to do means so much for them. Today while passing a welfare pack to one elderly lady who smiled a lot, I asked her "How are you" in mandarin and was expecting a reply of "I'm fine" as is the usual practice among those of my generation, but this lady said "I'm not ok. I'm sick", which caught me by surprise. I went on to find out that she has diabetes and cataracts and that she has been living in the one-room flat for 12 years. It is amazing to see that despite facing such hardship, she is able to make do with whatever she has and still wear a smile on her face and I think that is something that I have much to learn from. Deborah Siok (Senior High 2) In view of the increased demand for blood reserves to meet the transfusion
needs of patients in Singapore, Pek Kio Community Centre, Youth Executive Committee initiated this community project in 2013 to encourage blood donation and promote the spirit of giving among Singaporeans, with the inclusive of sports element. The project was a great sucesss and drawing more than 300 blood donors within 6 hours. Once again this year, we will be having a Street Netball Competition with collaboration with PLAYER Events in conjuction with our Annual Blood Donation Drive to promote Healthy Lifestyle through sport among Singaporeans. [Latest Update as at 4 March 2014 : All netball competition slots have been taken up. We are closed for registration for netball competition] Through this event, the committee aims to: 1. Promote the vision and mission of PAYM within the community, 2. Promote the Spirit of Giving among fellow Singaporeans, 3. Encourage blood donation among fellow Constituents and Singaporeans, 4. Promote healthy lifestyle among Singaporeans and 5. Promote team spirit and sense of collective honor amongst the young Our 2013 YEC Retreat was held in Sentosa. It was planned by Darren, Amelia and Khystelle who did a great job in putting together an awesome day for us. We met at 10am at Vivo City, Habourfront and headed down to Siloso Beach by the Sentosa Express and by foot to our destination. [Us. Before splitting up into teams] These are the team members. [We forgot to take group photos earlier :P] Team 1: Grace, Christopher, Eugene, Seah Hao [Led by Amelia] Team 2: Stefanie, Yuzi, Elgenia, Shawn [Led by Darren] Team 3: Nicholas, Jennifer, Siyu, Adeline [Led by Khystelle] Each team had 6 task to complete. 5 stations before 4.30pm. 6th station was against each other at 4.30pm at the destinated location. Only the first and sixth task is fixed, the others are based on pick. First task: Fill the water bottle @ Siloso Beach Each group were given 4 unopened water bottles and had to finish 1 full water bottle. Each member was given individual cups which we had to hold only with our mouth. Our group task was to transfer water from the first member to the next and then eventually into the empty water bottle. Only using mouth. It was a refreshing game as teammates tend to help wash your face :P Second task: Picture Hunt @ Imbiah Each group are shown 3 different pictures, and were tasked to take the same 3 pictures with their phone. The teams are given points based on how similar the pictures were to their objectives. Time for sherlock 0.o Third Task: Only for you @ RWS Each group were given clues that require us to find something that implies only for you and then had to take a group picture with the object. I was beginning to think this was a detective game! Fourth Task: Flowers for everyone @ current location Each group was given a few pictures of flowers that had to be given to any random strangers. If i recall it was 5 out of 6 flowers! Well.. technically 1 of the flowers was just a leaf... i shall leave it at that :P Fifth Task: Beachatrium Each group was given a small bottle and had to create their own beachatrium. I think pictures speak louder! Sixth Task: Dodgeball This task requires all 3 teams to face each other on the Sand Arena to play dodgeball. Each team will compete each other and will win the match if they beat the opposing team 2 out of 3 times. Aim: Not to get hit and take out the other team. After which, the top team will get to pick a forfeit for the other 2 teams to do. Thus, we marched! and Siyu had to get dunked! While the main event has ended, the retreat has not. We washed up and quickly headed towards Modesto @ Vivocity for our delicious and sumptuous dinner ! On behalf of the YEC, I would like to Thank all members for showing up and special thanks to Darren, Amelia and Khystelle for putting in all the hardwork in making this retreat a memorable and suntanning one!
Till next year! Moulmein celebrates its National Day Dinner & Golden Jubilee of Pek Kio CC on Saturday, 17 August 2013 at Pek Kio Community Centre at 21 Gloucester Road. More than 1600 residents and guests attended this gala dinner with grand entertainment. Grassroots Adviser Minister Lui Tuck Yew is the Guest-of-Honour of the event. YEC was assigned the important task to plan the programme for the evening. This year's programme saw most schools in the constituency putting up an item or two to entertain the audience. The following items were performed by the schools : . Tai Pei Child care - Mongolian Dance . Farrer Park Primary School - Hip Hop dance . Anglo Chinese School (Baker) - Boys' Brigade Band . San Yu Adventist School - Costume Parade . Balestier Hill Primary School - Modern Dance Circle . Raffles Girls Primary School - Choir . Singapore Chinese Girls' School - Western Chinese Traditional Dance . Balestier Secondary School - Wushu . Catholic Junior College - Comtemporary Dance . National Junior College - Chinese Orchestra (on side Stage) and GuZheng Ensemble. External performers included Malay Singer Rawi from Suria who sang a hokkien, a chinese and a malay song, Indian Singer Balan from Vasantham, Si Chuan Fusion Clothes Changing and local Singer Luo PeiXin. Dennis Chee was the Emcee for the evening. The highlight of the evening to us came when everyone stood up waving our national flags and singing to the community song "One United People". Students from 4 schools led by our YEC members streamed in during the song and some joined us on stage while the rest filled the isle. It was a heartwarming moment and as the song titled "One United People", we were "One United Moulmein". Congratulations also went out to our Chairperson, Miss Grace Ong, and our Treasurer, Mr Seah Si Hao. Grace, who was awarded the National Day Award-The Public Service Medal. She was presented with a plaque by our Grassroots Adviser that evening. Si Hao was presented with the Moulmein Constituency Award - Commendation Service Award ! It was a night worth celebrating! On Sunday 28 July 2013, Pek Kio CC celebrated its 50th Anniversary and the
official opening of its new premises at 21 Gloucester Road with a 'Big Bang' event. Guest of Honour for the night was Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong - he joined host Member of Parliament and Moulmein Grassroots Adviser Minister Lui Tuck Yew and other guests in enjoying an evening of lively entertainment and got a taste of the many activities which are being held at the various facilities in the new CC. The event was a success as it drew an estimated crowd of about 800 people throughout the entire event. The street netball competition was jointly organised with PLAYER events, a sports events planning management which was a tremendous success as we saw 120 players from 17 different teams who battled it out in the 2 main categories – Under 19 Girls and Mixed Open respectively. National Junior College students joined us in the event planning and contributed tremendously to our publicity, manpower and logistics. The enthusiasm and sporting spirit of players made the event a must watch, as even members of the public joined in amongst the spectators to catch a glimpse of the talented competitors despite the sweltering heat that afternoon. The netball competition finally came to an end with 8 teams who walked away cash prices and 2 teams, namely “XYZ” and “Mixed Ponies” who emerged as the champions in their respective categories. As the netball event progressed through the afternoon, our blood donation drive was held concurrently in the shopping mall. We had an overwhelming response as we saw 130 donors who came forward to donate blood to save lives of those in need of such blood donations. It was also heart-warming to witness 1st time donors from the general public and our youth group coming forward to play a part in giving back to the society through this blood donation drive. The event was brought to a close by Hwa Chong Institution's music and dance group! It was an eventful day for our youths as we were glad that our event was a success where we were able to fulfill our goals to promote a sense of giving through the blood donation and promote a healthy lifestyle and establish friendships through sports and games. A beautiful note from the NJC girls who joined us for the project planning : “The purpose of life is not to be happy. It is to be useful, to be honorable, to be compassionate, to have it make some difference that you have lived and lived well.” -Ralph Waldo Emerson Through these 4 months of organizing Moulmein Active Day (MAD), we had an incredible experience working with a group of enthusiastic people from the Pek Kio Youth Executive Committee (YEC) in Pek Kio CC, who took their precious time off their busy schedules to serve the community holeheartedly. MAD is an annual event held in Novena, Velocity to promote healthy lifestyle for Moulmein residents and also the public. Specifically for this year, a blood donation drive was held in conjunction with a street netball competition. Like us, a number of the YEC members are students studying in Junior Colleges and Secondary Schools, while there are a few who are working grown adults. We attended meetings with Pek Kio YEC and the staff of PLAYERS event, and participated actively in discussions to plan out the event from scratch, from the programme outline, logistics, budgeting, to aesthetics display. As we are still amateurs in organizing public events, the YEC and PLAYERS guided us along really well and made sure that we picked up as much as we can in the planning process. Through this experience, we have learnt countless things from the YEC. For the three of us, it was our first time organizing a public event and we realized how crucial it was to work out every single minute detail in order for the event to run smoothly and successfully. Not to forget, we have forged new friendships with people that were strangers to us just months before. We were awestruck and inspired by the enthusiasm of the YEC members and willingness to welcome us into their Pek Kio family. (They are always treating us to meals, sharing jokes and videos!) This event also provided us with a great opportunity to be exposed to various challenges and obstacles that we need to overcome in the future, for example evaluation of the situation and having foresight on what may possibly go wrong and getting prepared for them. This exposure definitely enlightened us about what goes on behind the scenes and allowed us to feel a greater passion to become an active citizen who serves with honor and most importantly, with our heart. We would like to extend our gratitude to Pek Kio YEC and PLAYERS for being such amazing “shifu” (masters) and also Ms Winnie Lim for providing us with this opportunity. By: Yong Zifong, Leow Kexuan & Loy Yongwei. (National Junior College) YEC members brought our mentees on a zoo outing on 21 Dec 2012. It was a treat for the children as they got to visit Jia Jia and Kai Kai, and a christmas shopping at Popular Bookstore where they selected new school bags, stationery and assessment books. To end off the evening, they were treated to sumptuous dinner at HK Cafe.Bring your child to join us for a day of fun! The theme for the party is FAIRIES and ELVES. There will be magic show, beauty pageant and games. Not forgetting our dear SANTA CLAUS!
Tickets are available at Pek Kio CC at a first come first served basis! Moulmein Volunteer Nite was held on 30 October 2012, Tuesday at Tanglin CC.
