Boat Cruise with St Theresa's Home 02/07/2012
A great way to start the year is to put smiles onto the face of others. This 28th Jan, morning, our group had visited the Saint Theresa's Home to socialize with the senior citizens and accompanied them on a boat cruise along the Singapore River @ Clark/Boat Quay. Although not all were able-bodied to join us, about 16 of the senior citizens did. It was for most of them, a new experience and a good one. This was, for us, just a simple gesture to show them that we remember them. Add Comment YEC Cohesion: Prawning Together! 12/26/2011
Christmas was great but this year's cohesion with the group really stood out for me. Our group, of 18, along with a few other mentees joined us for a 3 hour prawning session, from 3pm to 6pm with our 'own' exclusive pond :)) It's been a while since I prawn and we had quite a number of new-comers to prawning. It was slow for some of us and busy for others but at the end of the day, we really enjoyed ourselves and we caught a total of approximately 150 prawns and 3 small lobsters! (Kudos to Cecilia for catching the most and a small lobster on her FIRST attempt!!!) All hard labor must come to an end as we feast on those 150+ BBQ Prawns. Afterwards we had a Christmas Gift Exchange session and dinner together. What a way to end the year! 19th Term Office Bearer's Meeting 10/09/2011
We had our OBM today and the new committee has been formed! After the formal meeting, we had some team building games and then broke into 2 teams to discuss the workplan for this new term! We hope this will be a fruitful 2-year term for Pek Kio YEC! Pek Kio YEC 19th Term BGM 10/01/2011
Pek Kio CC YEC held its 19th Term Biennial General Meeting on 24 September on 24 September 2011 at Play Nation @ The Scape. Our Guest of Honour was our adviser, Mr Lui Tuck Yew and our Presiding Officer was Mr Gerald Tang, PBM, from Radin Mas CC. The new committee sees a total of 20 elected members whereby 6 are new and young members. Pek Kio YEC sees a new , young and vibrant committee and hopes to bring more interesting and engaging activities to our residents. The past two years have been fruitful. We focused a lot on engaging the children in our activities so that they could grow together and build a more cohesive and vibrant community. Besides organising children’s activities, we also provided free tuition to those from underprivileged families and engaged them in our mentorship program. On the other hand, we had also embarked on Go-Green initiatives where we hoped to help inculcate in people the importance of preserving the earth through recycling. Through organising the events, our members have also learnt new skills in event planning and hosting. In our effort to create reach out to the youths in Moulmein, we began sending them customised birthday cards with an enclosed introduction of YEC. Over time, we saw a number of youths between ages 15-20 who expressed interest to join us and be involved in community work. In line with our constituency’s workplan to provide more specific assistance to the vulnerable residents which includes free tuition to needy children, support for low-income families, better engagement with the seniors living around us and providing residents with greater opportunities to volunteer themselves with us to help the less fortunate. To date, we have tutored 3 primary school students – one of them did very well and was promoted to Secondary 1 express stream. Another received praise from his teacher that he had improved by close to 30% in his results within a short period of 6 months that we’ve tutored him. The time and effort that we put into this may seem like a big sacrifice to some people, but it is all worth it when the students excel in their academic and overall well-being. You really get a sense of achievement when you made a difference in someone’s life. With that in mind, our youth club had a 1-day retreat where we discussed our workplan to further align ourselves with the constituency’s. Our plans are: a) To collaborate with schools to expand the Mentorship & Tutoring Programme. This would entail having older students in upper secondary of JC providing curricular coaching to academically-weak primary school students who cannot afford private tuition. b) Connecting youths and young working adults with greater volunteering opportunities where interested individuals can participate in a wide range of meaningful activities such as reaching out to the elderly who live alone, visiting homes for the elderly, brightening the homes of our needy residents, promoting recycling among our residents and to organise fun activities for more of our residents. We also hope to facilitate the formation of Youth Chapters in Moulmein so that young people can better contribute to their own local community. c) We also hope to leverage on the improved facilities at the new Pek Kio CC to increase participation in grassroots activities when the new CC should be completed by 2013. We will need more volunteers from schools and friends to join us in our outreach to our vulnerable residents. On behalf of my committee, I welcome interested parties to come forward and render your services or to find out more from us. Pek Kio YEC's Old Posts 09/30/2011
Our old posts of activities can be viewed on http//:pekkioyec.wordpress.com This year's National Day Dinner celebration programme was organised by Pek Kio YEC. It was refreshing as the performances were very different from the past years. We had involved the schools in Moulmein Constituency to perform at the dinner. Although it was logistically difficult, but it was all worthwhile! We were glad to have the Raffles Girls' Primary School's String Emsemble to start with the opening item, playing 3 pieces. SJI Junior Choir boys led in the National Anthem and performed 2 choir pieces. We had Tai Pei PCF with their modern dance to the song Home by Kit Chan, Farrer Park Primary School with Malay Dance, Balestier Hill Secondary school with Multi-Ethinic dance, National Junior College with a their SYF Gold Award winning Malay Dance. We also had an interesting Bhangra dance by Tanglin CC Indian Dance Interest Group. For the first time too, we had all present wave their mini flags and to sing along to 2 Community Songs ! Everyone had great fun and i must say overall it was a tiring but interesting and fresh programme!
